Lesson 189

3) Mrs Miller loved flowers
Mrs Miller loved flowers and had a small but beautiful garden. In summer, her roses were always the most beautiful in her street. One summer afternoon, the doorbell rang at her front door, and when she went to open, she saw a little boy in front of the door. He was about seven years old, holding a large bunch of beautiful roses in his hand. "I am selling roses," he said. "Do you want a bunch, they're very cheap, five Euros for a big bunch, they're fresh, I picked them this afternoon." "My boy," said Mrs Miller, "I have roses from my garden whenever I want, and do not pay for them." "Oh, no, you don’t," said the little boy, "there are no roses in your garden because they are here in my hand!"

Lesson 185

1) Grandfather
Mrs Brown lived together with her husband and her old grandfather in a big house. Every morning the grandfather went for a walk in the park and came home for lunch at half past twelve. However, one day at twelve o'clock in the afternoon, a police car stopped in front of Mrs Brown's house, and two police officers helped Mr Brown to get out of the car. One of them said to Mrs Brown, "The poor old gentleman got lost in the park and called for help, so we sent a car to take him home." Mrs Brown was very surprised, but she thanked the police officer and they drove away. "But, grandfather," she said, "you were in that park for almost twenty years, how could you get lost?" The old man smiled, blinked with one eye, and said, "I didn’t really get lost; I just felt tired and did not want to walk home!"
