Lesson 217

3) Uncle Georg

Peter's uncle lived in the countryside. Once Peter visited him to spend a few weeks in his house. When they went for a walk or drove around and saw someone, his uncle always waved to that person. Peter was surprised and asked his uncle whether he knew everyone and where he had met them all. Uncle Georg shook his head. Peter was even more surprised and wanted to know why he then waved to them. "Well, Peter," answered his uncle, "When I wave to somebody and he knows me, he is satisfied, he continues his journey with a happier heart. But when I wave to somebody and he doesn’t know me, he is surprised thinking by himself, who I am and why I have waved to him. So he has something to think about during the trip, and his journey seems shorter to him. So I made everyone happy."

2) Children

One day Mr Miller saw a woman with ten children in the street. He was very surprised because all of them wore the same clothes - white caps, dark blue coats and grey pants. He asked the mother whether these were all her children and she always dressed them with the same clothes. She nodded and replied, "When we first had only four children, we dressed them in the same clothes because we didn’t want to lose any of them. It was easy to distinguish our children when they played with others, because they all wore the same clothes. And now that we have ten, we dress them with the same clothes because we don’t want to take other children home by accident. When other children are with us, it's easy to distinguish them because of their different clothes."
