2) Telephone
Mrs Miller waited for a phone call, but she had no bread in the house,
so she left the baby at home and said to his five-year-old brother, "I’ m
going to the shop, Peter, and I will be back in five minutes." Then, the
telephone rang, and Peter answered the phone. "Hello," a man said,
"Is your mother at home?" "No, she isn’t" Peter replied.
"Tell her, Mr Baker has phoned, when she
comes back." "What?" "Mr Baker. Write it down! B-A-K-E-R."
"How can I write a B?" "How can you write a B? Listen, my boy!
Is there a brother or sister in the house?" "My brother John is
here with me." "Well, I want to speak to him." Peter brought
the phone to the baby’s bed and gave it to John. When their mother came back,
she asked: "Has a man called?" "Yes," Peter said, "but
he wanted to talk to John."
