3) An English family in China Many years ago, an English family lived in China. One evening, an important Chinese official came for a visit. It was getting late, and he still had not left, so his hostess invited him for dinner. But there was very little food in the house, so she quickly went to the kitchen and talked to her Chinese cook. He said, "Everything's alright, you'll dine very well." When they all sat down at the dinner table, the lady was very surprised, because there was a lot of good / fine food on the table. After dinner, the lady went to the kitchen and said to the cook, "How could you prepare such a good meal in half an hour?" "I did not prepare it, ma'am," he said. "I sent one of the servants to the Chinese official's house and he brought his dinner."

2) The stupid man It was a beautiful spring morning. There was not a single cloud in the sky, and the sun was warm but not too hot, so Mr Miller was surprised to see an elderly gentleman at the bus stop with a big, strong, black umbrella in his hand. Mr Miller said to him, "Do you think / believe it will rain today?" "No," said the old gentleman, "I do not think so." "Then you carry the umbrella to keep the sun away?" "No, the sun is not very hot in spring." Mr. Miller looked back at the big umbrella, and the gentleman said, "I am an old man, and my legs are not very strong, so I actually need a walking stick, but when I carry a walking stick, people say, "Look, that poor old man!", and I do not like that. When I carry an umbrella in fine / good weather, people just say, "Look at this stupid man!"
