5)
A new hat
Mary
Smith was seventy years old. Liking hats very much, she bought a new one each
spring. Once in April, she said to herself that she would go to town to buy a
nice new hat. Having taken the bus to the city she went to a hat shop. She
asked one of the young saleswomen to show her a nice hat. The saleswoman
having brought her a lot of hats, Mrs Smith tried on one after the other.
After half an hour, she said, "Yes, that's a nice one, please send it to
my address." She gave the shop assistant a name card. "Yes,
ma'am," answered the saleswoman, "but that's your hat, you came
into the shop with it."

4)
A home for puppies
Mrs
Miller travelled by bus with her son, Peter. There was a puppy on the bus and
the boy seeing it wanted to take it home. But his mother told him that the
dog belonged to someone and he could not just take it with him. But the bus
driver said he would take it to the vet to have it put to sleep. Peter again
asking his mother to have the puppy, she replied that they would take it
home. That evening, her travelling on the same bus again, there was another
puppy which looked just like the first, and another boy wanted it. His mother
told the boy that the puppy belonged to someone. But the driver said that he
would take him to the vet to have him put to sleep. Mrs Miller asked him:
"Do you often bring dog puppies to the vet?" He replied, "My
dog has given birth to six puppies last week, and I'm looking for a home for
them."

3)
Mountains are not flat
John
working in an office liked to walk a lot. He always said that sitting in a
chair for eight hours every day, and then sitting at home in the evening, are
very unhealthy. Every summer going on vacation he took a train somewhere and
wandered for five or six hours a day. Once in spring, visiting a friend he
showed him a map, and said, "You've been to Switzerland and hiking in
the Alps, Tom. I'm going there in August, and on Saturday and Sunday the
first week I want to go from there to there." He pointed at two places
on the map with his finger. "Wait a minute, John," Tom answered.
"In two days? Your map is flat, but the mountains on your map are not
alike!"

2)
Water and soap
John
was nineteen years old. Having long hair he never washed or brushed it.
Wearing black clothes his nails were always black too. Not loving work he was
often absent. One Monday he said to himself that he would not work that week,
would get a medical certificate from his doctor, and stay at home, but still
get his money. Having arrived at the doctor he said, "I don’t feel well,
what do you want to do about it?" The doctor looking at him for a few
seconds replied, "Here! Take this with water three times a day!"
"What's this?" John asked. "Soap," answered the doctor.

1)
Buenos días
John
Miller was on holiday in Spain. He did not speak Spanish. The first morning,
him sitting down at his table in the dining room of his hotel, another man
greeted him with "Buenos días," and bowed. John said to himself
that this had to be his name. Bowing he replied with "John Miller".
The next morning the same man bowing again greeted him with "Buenos
días", and John answered with "John Miller". The waiter spoke
a little English, and after breakfast he told John that "Buenos
días" was not the name of this guest, but "Good morning" in
Spanish. "The next morning, John bowing greeted the Spanish gentleman
with" Buenos días. The Spaniard looking up smiled happily, because John
had now learned some Spanish, and answered "John Miller."

3)
My pyjamas
Professor
Miller visited some friends on the other side of the city. After a good
dinner and a game of cards, he said that he would go home. But his hostess
looking out of the window noticed that the weather was very bad and it was
cold, wet and windy. She asked him to stay with them that night. She went
upstairs to prepare a bed for him. Returning to the living room after a few
minutes, the professor had gone. She and her husband waited another half an
hour and then went to bed. But suddenly someone knocked on the back door of
the house. It was the professor, he was very wet. "You are here,"
said his host happily. "Yes," the professor answered smiling, and
declared, "I just went home to get my pyjamas."
