3) Mrs Miller’s telephone number The phone number of Mrs Miller was three-four-six-three, and the number of the cinema in her city three-four-six-four, so people often made a mistake and called her instead of the cinema. One evening, the telephone rang again and Mrs Miller answered the phone. A tired man's voice asked, "When do you start your last movie?" "I'm sorry," said Mrs Miller, "but you dialled the wrong number, this is not the cinema." "Oh, it started twenty minutes ago," said the man. "That's too bad. Thank you! Goodbye." Mrs Miller was very surprised, so she told her husband. He laughed and said: "The man's wife wanted to go to the movies, but he felt tired, so he called the cinema. His wife could hear him, but could not hear you. Tonight they will stay at home, and the man is happy!"

2) A man in Switzerland A long time ago, man had some business in Switzerland, so that he took leave of his wife at the airport and got on the plane. After ten days his work in Switzerland was finished, and so he bought a ticket for the journey back home. Then he went to the post office to send a telegram to his wife. After having written it, he gave it to the woman at the counter. The telegram read: 'My love! I'll be back tonight.' He asked how much it cost. She told him, and he counted his Swiss money. He did not have enough and did not want to change more. "Take the words 'my love' out of my telegram," he said, "then I have enough money to pay for it!" "No," she said opening her purse, and took out some money. "For the words 'My Love,' I will pay. Wives need these words from their husbands."

Switzerland is the country between Germany, France and Italy. European money / Swiss money I do business. = I work in my shop. He leaves me. / He takes leave of me. = He goes away from me. First a plane gets off from an airport, then it flies, and at the end it lands on an airport. When I want to travel by bus, I must pay, and then I get a piece of paper / a ticket for the bus. At Christmas I write a Christmas card for my grandmother. Then I take it to the post office. The post will take it to my grandmother. A Christmas card needs one week to get to my grandmother. When I want to tell my grandmother something quicker, then I write a telegram at the post office. My grandmother will get the telegram in three hours. In a post office a person works behind a window. This is a counter. My money is in a small bag. This is my purse. = I keep my money in a purse.

Lesson 271

1) The ladies club A Women's Club held a meeting every Friday afternoon and some expert was invited to give a lecture about important things. Afterwards they drank tea and could ask questions. One Friday a gentleman came to speak to the club about nourishment and said that there was not enough food for everyone in the world, more than half of the people in the world suffered from hunger, and if they had more food, they would get more babies, so they never stopped being hungry. Everywhere in the world, day and night and every minute, a woman gave birth to a baby. What should be done about it? He waited a few seconds. But before he could continue, one of the ladies said, "Well, why don’t we just find this woman and stop her?"
