3) The post office box When you have a post-office box, the postman will no longer bring letters, but you will go to the post office yourself and receive your letters and parcels from the box. The box is locked, and you have the key, so the letters are pretty safe. One day, a head of school wrote to the post office and applied for a box for his school. He soon got an answer saying, "We'll give you a PO Box in a month." Three months later, the headmaster wrote to the post-office again, "Why don’t we have a PO box yet?" That was the reply from the post office: "Dear Sir, we set up a post office box for you two months ago and wrote to you announcing it. Here is the key to your box, you will find our letter to you in it."

The postman takes your letters and Christmas cards from the post office to your house. Christmas card = postcard parcel = package I can read a postcard at once. I first must open a letter and then I can read it. A thief can’t steal my letters and parcels when they are in a box at the post office. = PO Box / post office box = In a post office box my letters are safe. A letter begins with: Dear Sir! / Dear Mary Sir = Mr The head of school / schoolmaster tells the teachers and pupils what to do. At the post office I apply for a post office box. I ask you for help at the post office to get a post office box. A post office sets up a post office box. A man builds a house. I organize a party. The club holds a meeting.

2) In the same office Mr Miller and Mr Smith worked in the same office. One day, Mr Miller told Mr Smith that he would organize a party at his home the following Wednesday evening and asked whether Mr Smith and his wife wanted to come too. Mr Smith thanked him for the invitation, saying that they would probably be free, but that he wanted to call his wife first, to be sure his wife did not want to go anywhere that night. Mr Smith went to the other room to telephone. When he came back, he looked very surprised and Mr Miller asked what was going on and whether he had talked to his wife. Mr Smith gave a negative answer and said, "She was not there, my little son was on the phone, and I said to him, "Is your mother there, David?" And he replied, "No, she is not in the house." "Where is she?" I asked. "She's out of the house somewhere." "What is she doing?" "She's looking for me."

1) A few days before Christmas It was a few days before Christmas, and when the office closed at half past six, most of the young men and women stayed and had a party. They ate and drank, danced, laughed and sang songs, and nobody wanted to go home. But John had a wife at home, and lived quite far from the city. Every few minutes he looked at the clock, and finally, when it was already very late, he wanted to leave. "John," his co-workers shouted. "You don’t want to leave, do you? Why don’t you stay and enjoy the party?" "I don’t want to go," said John. "I'm just going down to the train station to miss the last train home. I'll be back in a few minutes."
