Lesson 208

3) The sheep

Nasreddin had a nice, fat sheep. One day, the boys from his village told Nasreddin to slaughter it and invite them to a feast. Nasreddin did not want the boys to eat his sheep, so he tried to convince them it was not fat enough. But the boys said to him that a fortune teller had told them that the world was to end the next day, so the sheep would never get fat. Nasreddin had enough and gave in. They agreed to go to the river the next day and grill it there. When they reached the shore, the boys took off their clothes and jumped into the water to bathe while Nasreddin killed the sheep. When the boys came out of the water, their clothes were not there anymore. "Where's our clothes, Nasreddin," they asked. "Oh," he replied, "I made the fire with your clothes to grill the sheep, you will not need them anymore because the world is to end today (now). Don’t you remember?"

2) Clothes

Nasreddin wanted to buy new clothes, so he went to a shop. First he asked for some trousers and tried them on, but then took them off, gave them back to the seller and said that he should rather give him a coat. The man gave him a coat that cost as much as the trousers. Nasreddin took the coat and went out of shop. The seller ran after him and said, "You did not pay for this coat!" "But I gave you the trousers for the coat," said Nasreddin. "They cost as much as the coat, don’t they?" "Yes," said the seller, "but you did not pay for the trousers either!" "Of course, I did not pay for them," Nasreddin replied. "Because I did not take them. I'm not stupid. Nobody gives things back and then pays for them!"
