Lesson 232

2) Nasreddin and the dead

One winter, Nasreddin was sitting by the window of his house when he heard women crying in the street. He stuck his head out of the window and saw a lot of people coming to his house. They carried a dead man on a stretcher and the women cried, "Oh, why are you leaving us to go to a place without lights, fire and food? It's going to be dark there, and you'll be cold and hungry, nobody will take care of you, nobody will be nice to you, and nobody will love you there!" "My God," said Nasreddin to his wife. "They are talking about our house, they bring the dead here! Quick, lock the door, do not let them in!"
