Lesson 236

3) Nasreddin and the rain

One day, when Nasreddin was on the way, he came to a village. The people there said to him it had not rained for three months and they had run out of water, that their maize was going to wither away. They asked him to help them and pray for rain. Nasreddin wanted to help these poor people, so he asked for a bucket of water. There was very little water in the village, but each family gathered a bit and they filled a bucket. Then Nasreddin took off his shirt and started washing it. The people were outraged and angry. "The water was for our children to drink, and you wash your shirt in it!" But Nasreddin said, "Wait!" He hung up his shirt to dry and suddenly it started to rain. "I have only one shirt," he told the surprised people, "and whenever I wash it and hang it to dry, it immediately starts to rain."
