Lesson 269

3) Mrs Miller and her little garden

Mrs Miller had a small garden behind the house, where she planted some vegetables in spring. She looked after it carefully, and when summer came, it looked very beautiful. One evening Mrs Miller looked at the vegetables and decided to harvest them the next day and that the family could eat them then. But the next morning, her son ran into the kitchen shouting: "Mother, come quickly! Our neighbour’s ducks are in the garden and eating away our vegetables!" Mrs. Miller ran out, but it was too late. All the vegetables were gone. Mrs. Miller cried bitterly, and her neighbour was very sorry, but that was the end of the vegetables. Then a few days before Christmas, Mrs Miller’s neighbour brought a package containing a beautiful, fat duck, and a piece of paper saying, "Enjoy your vegetables!"

2) Workers

In a small factory there was no canteen and no restaurant nearby, so the workers brought food from home and ate it at lunchtime in the factory. One of the workers always had fish sandwiches. Every day he took one of them out of his bag, bit into it, and then angrily threw it away. One day one of his colleagues finally asked him whether he did not like fish sandwiches. Jim answered that he hated them. "Why is your wife preparing them for you every day? There are many other tasty spreads for sandwiches. Tell her, and she'll use other spreads!" "It's not that easy," Jim replied. "I do not have a wife, I prepare the sandwiches myself."

Then the captain came and introduced himself. He informed the lady that the weather was fine, that there were no clouds in the sky and everything was running like clockwork. But she kept hiding. So the captain turned and walked away. Then the old lady looked out under her cover with one eye saying gently, "I'm sorry, young man, but I do not like planes and will never fly again, but I want to tell you confidentially that your wife and you keep the plane very clean!"
