Lesson 353

downtown = the centre of town = the middle of the town / city

desk = a table for to write on, but not for eating

slippers = shoes, not for the street but for the house

4) Twenty euros

John and Tim worked for the same company. One day John lent Tim twenty euros, but then Tim left the company and moved to another town without giving back John his twenty euros. Not having seen Tim for a year John heard from another friend that Tim was in town and staying at a downtown hotel. John went to see him there late in the evening. He found out Tim's room number from the clerk at desk downstairs and went up to find him. Having got there, he saw Tim's shoes outside the door waiting to be cleaned. He thought that Tim had to be / was in the room and knocked. There was no answer. He knocked again. Then he said, "I know you're in, Tim, your shoes are out here." "I went out in my slippers," answered a voice from inside the room.
