Lesson 369

The police bring the thief to prison / jail and there he must stay for some months or years.
In the prison, the thief is a prisoner.
The zoo is the prison for the animals there.

I’m not a farmer but a teacher. I have vegetables in my garden. The farmer has fields.
In spring, the farmer ploughs his fields, then plants / sows the vegetables / potatoes and in autumn, he harvests them.
sow, sowed, sowed / sown = to plant = to seed
to seed = the seed

I shoot with a gun.
weapon = knife, gun

1) The potato farmer

A potato farmer was sent to jail at the time when he should have ploughed the fields for planting the new potato seed. He knew that his wife would not be strong enough to do the ploughing alone, but that she could do the planting. And he also knew that he had no friends or neighbours willing to do the ploughing for him. Therefore, he wrote his wife a letter saying that she should not plough the potato field because he had hidden the money and the gun there. Ten days later, he received a letter from his wife saying, "I think someone reads your letters before they go out of the prison. Some policemen arrived here two days ago and ploughed up the whole potato field. What should I do now?" The prisoner wrote back immediately: "Of course, plant the potatoes!"
