Lesson 371

Manchester / London / Oxford / Cambridge = cities in England

A person wants to travel to another town. He / She doesn’t have much money, therefore he / she stands beside a highway and holds a sign (big sheet of paper) above his / her head and waits for a car to stop. = a hitchhiker (He / She hikes by car.)

catch a cold = get ill / sick

3) The hitchhiker

Mr Miller drove to Oxford on a cloudy day when he saw a hitchhiker holding a sign above his head saying "Cambridge". Mr. Miller thought it unwise to pick up hitchhikers because he had read frightening stories about them. However, he was a friendly man, so he stopped and said, "You'll get wet and catch a cold. You are on the wrong way to Cambridge. This road goes to Oxford." "Yes, I know," answered the hitchhiker cheerfully, as he got into Mr Miller's car. "I've only been standing here for a few minutes, and I knew someone would probably stop to tell me that I was on the wrong way. If I'd held up a sign saying "Oxford", I might have had to wait an hour for someone to stop."
