Lesson 374

A glass, a bottle and glasses are made of glass.

Marbles are very small balls made of glass.

I can’t work because the baby is in my room.
= She is in my way.
= The baby bothers / disturbs me at work.

I have money but I don’t give you any.
= I keep the money.

You speak Chinese, I don’t speak Chinese.
= I can’t understand you.
We are on the street and there are many cars. It’s very loud. I can’t understand what you say.

1) Marbles

A busy mother asked her six-year-old son to take his little sister into the garden and look after her for half an hour while she was cleaning the house. The boy took the baby out and they seemed to be playing quite happily when the mother suddenly heard the baby crying. Therefore, she called to her son: "William, what's wrong with Susan? Why is she crying?" "She wants my marbles," replied William. "Well, let her play with a few of them if that stops her crying!" said the mother patiently. "I have to finish this work and she would be in my way in here." "But she wants to keep them," replied William. "No, she doesn't," said the mother. "She is still a baby. She's too small to understand anything like that." "But I know she wants to keep them," replied William. "She's already swallowed two of them."
