Lesson 377

A student studies at university. = his studies at university Five hundred years ago, every country in Europe had kings, but today they have governments. A king or a government govern a country. advise = propose = suggest I want to work for a company; therefore, I go to see / meet the head of the office of this company and introduce myself. There he asks me questions. = This is a job interview. In a company, there are many offices. Many people work in each office. An office with many workers is a department. He was successful. = He could do something. = He managed to do something. = He was able to do something. Tom is John’s uncle. = John is Tom’s nephew. Mary is Susan's aunt. = Susan is Mary's niece. How many cars are there? = There are ten cars. How much money is there? = There are ten euros. How much bread is there? = There are ten kilos of bread. 4) A good job Having finished his studies at the university, William started looking for a job. He didn't know what he wanted to do, but one of his uncles having worked for the government for thirty years advised William to look for a job of the same kind. So one day he went to an interview. He was successful and his first job was in a large government office in London. William having worked there for a few weeks, his uncle visited the family on a Saturday evening. He was happy that his nephew had managed to get a job with the government and asked him many questions. One of the questions he asked was, "And how many people work in your department, William?" The young man thought for a few seconds and then replied, "About half of them, Uncle Thomas."
