Lesson 376

absence = absent

At the end of school or university, we write examinations / exams.
The doctor gives me tests. = He examines me.

Today, it’s the tenth of February two thousand and twenty. = This is the date of today.

3) The old professor

After having finished university, William went abroad. When he returned home for a visit twenty years later, he decided to visit his old university and was delighted to learn that his old professor was still teaching there. He visited the old man, and after having had an interesting conversation, the professor went out to get something. During his absence, William saw an examination paper on the desk. He looked at the date and found that it had been given to the students the week before. William picked up the sheets and read them. When the professor came back, William said to him: "Professor, I'm sure these are exactly the same questions you asked us in our exams twenty years ago. How is that possible?" "Yes, that's right," agreed the professor calmly. "The questions are the same, but the answers have changed."
