1)
Alone in a small flat
Mrs
Miller living alone in a small flat was old and did not like noise.
Therefore, she was very pleased when the young couple who lived above her
moved out. A new, young man moving in Mrs Miller thought him looking very
calm to her. However, at three o'clock the next morning Mrs Miller was woken
by the barking of a dog. Never having heard such a thing in the house before,
she thought the dog had to belong to the new inhabitant. Therefore, calling
him she said a few bad things about him and the dog, and hung up the phone
before he could answer. Nothing else happened until three o'clock the next
morning. Then Mrs Miller's telephone rang. And picking up the phone, a man's
voice said, "I am the resident above you and calling you to tell you
that I have no dog," and hung up before she could answer.

5) A very pretty girl
Elisabeth was a very pretty girl
and her parents were rich. Many of the young men in town wanted to marry her,
but she was not satisfied with any of them. One evening one of the handsomest
of the young men who wanted to marry Elisabeth visiting her at her parents'
house asked her to become his wife. She answered: "No, William! I will
not marry you. I want a husband who is famous, who can play music, sing and
dance very well, who can tell really interesting stories, who does not smoke
or drink, who stays home in the evening and stops talking when I'm tired of
listening." The young man getting up took his coat and went to the door.
But before leaving the house, he turned around and said to Elisabeth,
"It's not a man you're looking for, it's a TV."

4)
Usually very punctual
An
employee always working very hard and being usually very punctual, arrived at
his office very late one morning. He had bruises on his face, a scratch on
one of his lips, sticking plaster on his left wrist and thumb and a bandage
on his right shoulder. He had also injured his knees, ankles and some of his
toes. The office manager not being a patient man had been waiting for the
employee because he wanted to give him some important work. When he finally
saw him coming, he said angrily, "You're an hour late, Miller."
"I know, sir," replied the clerk politely, "I am very sorry.
My flat is on the eighth floor and just before I left home this morning, when
I closed one of the windows, I slipped and fell out." "Well,"
replied the office manager coldly, "did that take you an hour?"

3)
In your free time
Tom
Miller working in a large office in the city usually went to the hairdresser
during work hours to get his hair cut, although this was against the rules.
The staff had to get their hair cut in their free time. While Tom being at
the hairdresser's one day, the office manager happened to come in to have his
hair cut. Tom seeing him tried to hide his face, but the office manager
sitting down next to him soon recognized him. "Good morning,
Miller," said the office manager, "I see that you are having your
hair cut in office time." "Yes, sir," admitted Tom quietly,
"you know, it grows in office time." "Not all of it,"
replied the head of the office, "some of it grows in your own
time." "Yes, sir, that is quite true," replied Tom politely,
"but I will not have it all cut off."
