6) No, sir!

A very young, new officer was standing at a train station. He was on his way to visit his mother in another city and wanted to phone her to let her know the arrival time of his train so that she could pick him up in her car at the station. He looked into all of his pockets and found that he had no telephone coins to make calls. Therefore, he went outside and looked for someone who could help him. Finally, an old soldier came by and the young officer stopped him and said, "Do you have ten cents of change?" "Wait a moment!" the old soldier replied, putting his hand in his pocket. "I'll see if I can help you." "Don't you know how to speak to an officer?" said the young man angrily. "Now let's start again! Do you have ten cents of change?" "No sir!" the old soldier replied quickly.

5) Leftovers

A young mother believed it to be very wrong throwing away food when there were so many hungry people on Earth. One day she gave her little daughter her evening tea before putting her to bed. At first, she handed her a piece of fresh black bread and butter, but the child said that she didn't want it like that and asked for some jam on her bread. Her mother looked at her for a few seconds and then said, "when I was a little girl like you, Susan, I always got either bread and butter or bread and jam, but never bread and butter and jam." Susan looked at her mother for a few moments with pity in her eyes and then said gently to her, "aren't you happy that you are living with us now?"

Five hundred years ago, every country in Europe had kings, but today they have governments.
A king or a government govern a country.

advise = propose = suggest

I want to work for a company; therefore, I go to see / meet the head of the office of this company and introduce myself. There he asks me questions.
= This is a job interview.
In a company, there are many offices. Many people work in each office. An office with many workers is a department.

He was successful.
= He could do something.
= He managed to do something.
= He was able to do something.

Tom is John’s uncle. = John is Tom’s nephew.
Mary is Susan's aunt. = Susan is Mary's niece.

How many cars are there? = There are ten cars.
How much money is there? = There are ten euros.
How much bread is there? = There are ten kilos of bread.

4) A good job

Having finished his studies at the university, William started looking for a job. He didn't know what he wanted to do, but one of his uncles having worked for the government for thirty years advised William to look for a job of the same kind. So one day he went to an interview. He was successful and his first job was in a large government office in London. William having worked there for a few weeks, his uncle visited the family on a Saturday evening. He was happy that his nephew had managed to get a job with the government and asked him many questions. One of the questions he asked was, "And how many people work in your department, William?" The young man thought for a few seconds and then replied, "About half of them, Uncle Thomas."

3) The old professor

After having finished university, William went abroad. When he returned home for a visit twenty years later, he decided to visit his old university and was delighted to learn that his old professor was still teaching there. He visited the old man, and after having had an interesting conversation, the professor went out to get something. During his absence, William saw an examination paper on the desk. He looked at the date and found that it had been given to the students the week before. William picked up the sheets and read them. When the professor came back, William said to him: "Professor, I'm sure these are exactly the same questions you asked us in our exams twenty years ago. How is that possible?" "Yes, that's right," agreed the professor calmly. "The questions are the same, but the answers have changed."

The elephant is red. = This is impossible. This cannot be.

2) The left leg or the right leg

William was a waiter in a small restaurant. One day a man came in and sat down at one of the tables. William greeted him and went to ask him what he wanted to order. The man said he wanted chicken with potatoes and various vegetables. "Fried chicken," he emphasized when William left him. "Very good, sir," replied William, and disappeared into the kitchen. However, the man called him back and said, "Just a moment, waiter, please try to have it cooked just right, not too little and not too much and with as little fat as possible." "Very well, sir," replied William patiently. "I'll tell the cook." Again, he started walking towards the kitchen. But again, the man stopped him with the words, "Oh, and I forgot to explain that I’m particularly fond of the leg." "Very well, sir," replied William, "do you prefer the left leg or the right leg?"

1) Marbles

A busy mother asked her six-year-old son to take his little sister into the garden and look after her for half an hour while she was cleaning the house. The boy took the baby out and they seemed to be playing quite happily when the mother suddenly heard the baby crying. Therefore, she called to her son: "William, what's wrong with Susan? Why is she crying?" "She wants my marbles," replied William. "Well, let her play with a few of them if that stops her crying!" said the mother patiently. "I have to finish this work and she would be in my way in here." "But she wants to keep them," replied William. "No, she doesn't," said the mother. "She is still a baby. She's too small to understand anything like that." "But I know she wants to keep them," replied William. "She's already swallowed two of them."
